2003 Award Honoree Jody Brylinsky Jody Brylinsky currently is a professor of Sport Studies in the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, MI. During her tenure at Western Michigan University, she has attempted to further the belief in the social good that can come from structured physical activity and sport if delivered by trained, caring professionals. Brylinsky has attempted to provide leadership in contributing to this premise by being an active participant in academic and professional service. A past president of the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE), she currently chairs the Reader Training and Folio Review for the National Council for the Accreditation of Coach Education. Teaching responsibilities center on the socio cultural issues of sport and physical activity, providing opportunities in coaching education that harness the power of sport in the context of building social capital and civic engagement. Brylinsky has written numerous publications that are utilized by national organizations to serve the coaching education population and coach practitioners. However, her strongest area of professional recognition comes in the form of requested professional presentations on quality coach education and related youth sport initiatives. Brylinsky's expertise has been noted by her recent induction into the Sport Hall of Fame by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education, and Project Gold of the United States Olympic Committee. Brylinsky's voice for fair play and citizenship through sport is most
clear in her volunteer opportunities with Special Olympics programs. She
noted, "I have been enriched by the spirit and courage of my fellow
athletes and feel a renewed commitment to the spirit of sportsmanship
and inherent values that come through quality sport opportunities."
