2003 Award Honoree Melanie Mendrop Melanie Mendrop of Hinds Community College in Raymond, Mississippi, is the 2003 recipient of the Lea Plarski award, given annually by the National Junior College Athletic Association. Mendrop, a sophomore women's soccer player from Vicksburg, Mississippi, exemplifies the qualities represented by this award - sportsmanship, leadership, community service, academic excellence, as well as athletic ability and achievement. In 2002-03, Mendrop maintained a 3.35 grade-point average in her work toward a dental hygiene major. Mendrop volunteered with the Medical/Dental Ministry, Adopt-A-Highway and Angel Tree programs, while participating as an active member of Mu Alpha Theta, Alpha Beta Gamma and Circle K organizations. Mendrop has been involved actively with Hinds Community College's student recruiting and public relations group. Her work in the community is strictly on a volunteer basis, where she goes above and beyond the call of duty to educate prospective students about the educational opportunities that await them in college. In addition to her community and extracurricular activities, Mendrop was a 2003 NJCAA second team All-American and a two-time NJCAA Region 23 selection. As a two-year starter at Hinds, Mendrop led her team to two MACJC state and NJCAA region championships. She was a member of the 2001 Hinds team that placed fourth at the NJCAA Women's Soccer Championship. Other honors included the 2001 NJCAA Academic Team of the Year; 2002 NSCAA College Team Academic Award; and the 2002 Team Ethic Award. |
