Developed by the Citizenship Through Sports Alliance in 1998, "It's Up to Us" is a complete turn-key product to launch local citizenship efforts from the ground up, yet designed to fit your community's unique needs and personality. The action pack includes:

Building the team - step by step directions on who should be included, and how to recruit and involve others to form a strong, inclusive team.

It's Up To UsGenerating publicity - guidelines for involving local and regional media, including sample press releases for print and electronic media.

Suggested activities - A variety of local events used to spotlight sportsmanship efforts in the community, including how to tie-in promotions at existing sporting events and school activities.

Seminars and events - Designed to introduce the local citizenship effort and generate publicity.

Specific methods to influence children - More than two dozen teachable moments that occur naturally in sports, where parents and coaches can focus to demonstrate sportsmanship to children.

Codes of conduct - A sportsmanship pledge that sets standards for ethical behavior for all participants, including fans, players, coaches or officials.

Citizenship Awards - Provides several concepts for community awards and details criteria, the nomination and selection process, and how recipients should be honored.


The Indianapolis Stay in Bounds grass-roots initiative has been based in part on the principles and activities outlined in "It's Up to Us" and the toolkit has been requested by a number of communities across the nation and is featured below.
